미 항공 대원들의 영국 캐드남 존 발리콘 소풍- American Airmen enjoy a pint after their picnic at the Sir John Barleycorn Cadnam

2차 세계대전중 미 항공대원들(Captain R W Smith (from Pomona, California), Lieutenant J D Baird (from Suring, Wisconsin),

 Miss Kathleen Deane (from Connecticut and one of the American Red Cross hostesses working at the club) 

and Lieutenant E T Broadnax (from Bastrup, Louisiana).의 영국 햄프셔주 캐드남 존 발리콘 소풍 - 1943년 

존 발리콘(John Barleycorn)은 먼 옛날부터 영국인들이 죽이고 싶도록 증오하는 인물이었다. 

그러나 존 발리콘운 죽여도 죽여도 또 살아나고 또 살아나는 인물이었다. 

그래서 가장 잔인무도한 방법으로 죽이고 그 시체마저도 갈아마셔 버린다. 

영국에서 John은 흔한 이름이고, Barleycorn은 보리(barley)의 낟알(corn)을 뜻한다. 

존 발리콘은 사실 보리의 낟알을 의인화한 존재다.

 영국에서 보리는 예로부터 식량으로도, 맥주나 위스키의 원료로도 중요했던 곡물이었다.  

영국의 전설적인  록밴드 트래픽(Traffic)의 보컬리스트 스티브 윈우드가 불렀던 

존 발리콘은  영국의 민요인 John Barleycorn이 원류이다.

이 노래는 농부가 보리를 추수하는 과정을 존 발리콘을 죽이는 과정으로 묘사하고 있다. 

존 발리콘은 여러 아티스트들이 불렀지만 가장 유명한 것은 1970년 트래픽이 부른 곡이다.

그와 더불어 제쓰로 툴 그룹이 1992년 그리스 라이브 실황공연에서   

리더 이안 앤더슨의 플륫 연주가 가미된 존 발리콘을 멋 떨어지게 불렀다. 

John Barleycorn -Traffic 

There were three men came out of the West, (서쪽에서 온 세 남자가 있었다네)

Their fortunes for to try, (그들이 할 일은 운명이었다네)

And these three men made a solemn vow: (그리고 그 세 남자는 엄숙하게 선언했네)

John Barleycorn must die. (존 발리콘은 죽어야 한다고)

They've ploughed, they've sown, they've harrowed him in, (그들은 쟁기로 밭을 갈고, 씨앗을 심고, 그 위에 써레질을 했다네)

For he's bound him to the cart (수레에 꽁꽁 묶어 놌았다네)

Without a little Barleycorn. (그 작은 발리콘이 없다면)
